I thought I would do a litle looking back on my brief 29 years and go back to Glacier National Park in Montana Summer of 1997...I had just finished my freshman year on a tennis scholarship at a JUCO in Dothan...getting ready to head off to Auburn the following Fall...I needed to get out of AL and see some things...I've always loved the mountains...something about the sunset and big sky...I guess Andrew needed to get away too...So, we sent summer job applications to Yellowstone National Park in WY and Glacier National Park in MT...I believe we actually put on the application, "willing to wash dishes"...guess what - they called back...We left for Montana that June...When we finally realized our destination, Many Glacier Hotel, also known also the hotel that inspired Stephen King's "The Shining", we were two and a half hours from civilization without a car...we slept in bunk bed's, shared a bathroom with many...took large backpacks and hiking boots...ready to explore...
We met people our age looking for the same "get-a-way" from everywhere in the World...we saw grizzly bears...hiked up the sides of mountains...drank water we filtered from a stream...saw Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding, Jr film "What Dreams May Come"...drank beer and played pool...celebrated 4th of July somewhere I'll never remember with two other guys from UT I'll never forget...watched the sunset behind our back door everynight...saw a guy fall two stories - he's lucky to be alive...my parent's got divorced and yes, worked in the "Dish Pen" five days a week scrubbing pots...
I hope when my kids turn 19 they ask if they can "go away" for the Summer and explore someplace new...It's one of the best thing's I've ever done...I will never forget the Summer of 1997 -- the people, the story, the place! (JA)
Here's a slideshow of that Summer...(warning: it is almost 10 minutes long)
