Since when does Kentucky vs. Tennessee get higher ratings than Auburn-Alabama...I do think the 7pm start time will help Auburn and it's better for tailgating...hopefully Zeke decides to come before or after that weekend...stay tuned...by the way - Katherine started her maternity leave this past Monday...She's reading, relaxing, and waiting...
CBS sketched out a game plan last spring that included a rare doubleheader Saturday to assure itself it could find a spot for the Iron Bowl.
Monday, the network reversed fields.
The Southeastern Conference's principal television network passed on the Nov.24 Auburn-Alabama game, leaving the Iron Bowl to fall to a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN, which had the third choice of games next weekend.
CBS opted to televise an SEC East showdown between Tennessee at Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. and then Florida State at Florida at 4 p.m.
"I wish we could do all three," said Mike Aresco, a CBS senior vice president of programming.
Six of the last seven games have been on CBS. ESPN televised the game from 1995 to 1999.
Aresco said the Iron Bowl would have probably been televised by CBS this weekend - its usual date on the calendar - had the SEC not ordered the game to be played after Thanksgiving.
"Before, it was on a week when it was obviously the game to do," Aresco said.
The new schedule puts the Iron Bowl in direct competition with other rival games such as Florida-Florida State and Georgia-Georgia Tech. This year, surprising Kentucky forced CBS to televise its game with Tennessee because of its impact on the SEC East race.
"As the exclusive network carrier of the conference, it would be hard for us to pass up that game," Aresco said.
Aresco said CBS had originally prepared for televising Auburn-Alabama and Florida-Florida State by taking a morning game away from Lincoln Financial Sports in order to air a doubleheader.
But Kentucky played hard ball with the Iron Bowl by staying in the SEC East race. Auburn and Alabama didn't have much of an answer after both lost last weekend, losing their television appeal.
"Now we've got Tennessee-Kentucky, and we wanted to do Florida-Florida State because of the buzz around Tim Tebow," Aresco said. "The ratings for this game for us in the past have been good, and we felt that was the way for us to go later in the day."
